Stanley Yelnats lives under a curse that has been weighing on his family since his great-grandfather's time: he is in the wrong place at the wrong time. So it's no surprise that he is sent to a camp for juvenile offenders, even though he is innocent. The camp is called Camp Green Lake, but there hasn't been a lake there for over 100 years. Every day, the boys have to dig a hole 1.50 meters deep in the bottom of the former lake—supposedly for character training. Stanley soon realizes that the camp administrator is not interested in character training. The author combines a surreal fairy-tale world with harsh realism in this fascinating work, which also has room for friendship and human solidarity.
